Equipment: Reach for the stars!

September 18, 2013

I’ve been talking about the demonstration home at one of our locations lately, and ASI installed some great upgrades including a high efficiency water heater and HVAC system, Energy star appliances, and LED lighting.  We’ve discussed many of these things in the past because they make sense, especially when electric rates can be high.

It’s a great idea to reduce the wattage of lights but who wants to read in the dark?  Lighting is like comfort, you don’t need to compromise in order to be more efficient.  When it comes to lighting, Lower wattage CFL’s and LED’s allow us the best of both worlds just like high efficiency equipment.  As an added bonus, the LED lighting that we install has a life of over 50,000 hours. That’s a lifetime for most people.

They say HVAC is the heart of home performance and good equipment goes hand and hand with good buildings, these are stars that are both within your reach.

Not Just Cosmetics, Quiet, Comfortable, Energy Efficient and Clean Air Make a Home a True Thing of Beauty!

September 4, 2013

Demonstration home before and after

GreenHomes America partner, ASI Hastings, demonstration home had a number of improvements to help show homeowners how their homes could improve and how they could save in the process.  But cosmetics are the type of improvement we think of when we talk about home improvement.  Make it look good, new coat of paint, maybe a new countertop.

There’s much more that can be done and this demonstration home improvement list included: peace and quiet, comfort, and indoor air quality in addition to energy savings. There’s savings to be had outside too.

The team at ASI Hastings teamed up with Padre Dam, the local water district; they planted a less water intensive yard around the home.  The front yard is referred to as xeriscape. Reducing water usage makes sense here! More money is spent pumping water in the state of California than for any other electrical usage.

They also installed a lighter color garage door, which reduced some of the solar gain on that space.  That keeps equipment in the garage cooler and the house as well since the garage buffers part of home from the heat outside.

There’s no avoiding sunshine in San Diego, and it was put to good use in the as well adding panels to the roof, that’s not cosmetics, that’s great savings! We will cover solar, but more importantly what was done before it was even considered, in the coming weeks!

Thanks,

Jason

It is an honor and a pleasure to welcome our latest partner Gundlach’s Plumbing & Sheet Metal to the GreenHomes America network where we can truly help fulfill their statement, “today’s technology with good old fashioned integrity.”  It is great to see our network grow in Southern California, with this new location in Bakersfield.

Gundlach’s is a plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning service provider, originating in 1900 as a plumbing repair shop.  They also provide remodeling services for bathrooms and kitchens; becoming a GreenHomes America partner, they will now include home energy retrofits, allowing homeowners to dramatically improve their home’s energy efficiency and comfort levels.

Ken Wonderly, Owner of Gundlach’s says “We feel that the home energy retrofit market is going to grow substantially over the next few years and we are very excited to be part of it”.  Too true, I can see it growing already.  Welcome aboard!

Boy has it been a busy year for GreenHomes America!

October 1, 2012

Young’s Air Conditioning of Los Banos, California came on board before the start of the New Year.  Young’s is a family business with strong roots in Los Banos and a reputation as the area’s leading provider of energy efficient heating and cooling services.

In the early part of the winter, we added three locations with Carolina Green Energy Systems.  CGES is one of South Carolina’s oldest and largest comprehensive Home Performance Contractors, and we are proud to include them in the GreenHomes Network.

Also new in town is Air Rescue Air Conditioning of Tampa, Florida. This is our first partner from the Sunshine state.   Air Rescue started in 1965, and is one of the oldest and largest residential HVAC contractors in the Tampa Bay Metro area.   Air Rescue will service customers in over seven counties.

This is only the beginning as GreenHomes grows to better serve you nationally!  Stay tuned for more!

Thanks,

Jason.

Better Resale value from “Green” Homes

September 28, 2012

A recent study this summer from UC Berkeley and UCLA looked at homes that were certified as green from a few different organizations.  Although the certification standards varied, the homes needed to have details such as well-insulated ceilings and walls and energy-efficient lighting.  These are just some of the basics of making a home “green”, as well as efficient appliances, proper HVAC equipment and good indoor air quality.  These things unfortunately don’t always happen in new homes, even those with the green label.  However, they can and should happen in every home, and that’s why we do what we do.

This study comes from a state with a very nice incentive system in place for energy efficiency retrofits.  Energy upgrade California is a good place to start if you are a resident of CA.  For residents of other states, you can find some incentive programs from DSIREThe full study can be found here.

You can also contact one of our locations to learn more about how you can make your home safer, energy efficient, more valuable, and of course, green!

Jason

How does your state rank in Energy Efficiency?

October 28, 2011

The American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy released its 2011 state energy scorecard.  The ACEEE explains: “energy-efficient states have two primary traits: 1) a policy and regulatory environment that enables the efficient use of energy; and 2) successful performance investing in programs that save energy.”

Massachusetts for the first time is number one, unseating the long standing California.  It’s nice to see that Greenhomes America is part of all this with locations in many of the top ranking states.

Look here to find out how your state ranked and some of the details that put them there.

Coming down the road–Nissan Leaf to Power Homes?

August 15, 2011

A few weeks ago, I showed an example of the Nissan Leaf charging stations that our sister company, Linc Lighting & Electrical, is installing in California.  That’s cool.  And it’s even more exciting when we’re able to look at the whole house while we’re there, and boost the energy-efficiency to help offset the car’s electricity us.  [And the Energy Upgrade California incentives are a financial boost!]

Looking down the street and around the corner, there may be even more interesting possibilities integrating Home/Car/Electricity.  For example, Nissan has unveiled and is testing a new system allowing the car to supply electricity to the house.  This has applications from off-peak (and lower rate) power storage to emergency back-up power.  We’ll have to wait and see how this pans out.  Roll this in with smart meters, renewable generation, and community-scale projects, and things get even more interesting.  And that is what is keeping the elves in our Energy Hub workshop busy!

Meanwhile, one thing we know for certain, focusing on efficiency first makes sense!  And at home you get to do this by making your home more comfortable, durable, and healthier.

Thanks,
Mike

LA Times: Energy-efficiency tax credits gutted

December 26, 2010

The LA Times reports what we touched on several days ago.   The extended federal tax credit is much lower in 2011 than is was in 2010.   This is certainly a big step backward in terms of a good national energy policy (a phrase you almost can’t use “national energy NONpolicy” might be better.  But in many states–including California–the outlook isn’t bleak.   In CA, for example, Energy Upgrade CA, is just about ready to kick off in earnest (we’ve already be delivering improvements under the pilot phase.   And as I mentioned last time, many generous state, local, and/or utility incentives still exist or are just coming on line.  Give us a call or visit our website to see how we can help.

And be proactive about it.  While the jobless numbers are still way too high, the U.S. economy has begun its climb–expected to be a long, slow climb, out of the dumps.  And with it, energy prices are climbing.  As reported in the WSJ, pre-Christmans trading saw oil futures climbing above $91/barrel again, up more than 13% since November.  “Several major banks expect prices to reach triple digits next year as demand rebounds with the improving global economy.”    And retail gasoline price are climbing, reflecting a broader impact to consumers.

Dollars invested in energy-efficiency start saving now, and provide even greater protection as energy prices increase.  So while the gutting of the tax credit isn’t a good thing, it’s still the right time to save.  Take the steps now.

Thanks,
Mike
