Equipment: Reach for the stars!

September 18, 2013

I’ve been talking about the demonstration home at one of our locations lately, and ASI installed some great upgrades including a high efficiency water heater and HVAC system, Energy star appliances, and LED lighting.  We’ve discussed many of these things in the past because they make sense, especially when electric rates can be high.

It’s a great idea to reduce the wattage of lights but who wants to read in the dark?  Lighting is like comfort, you don’t need to compromise in order to be more efficient.  When it comes to lighting, Lower wattage CFL’s and LED’s allow us the best of both worlds just like high efficiency equipment.  As an added bonus, the LED lighting that we install has a life of over 50,000 hours. That’s a lifetime for most people.

They say HVAC is the heart of home performance and good equipment goes hand and hand with good buildings, these are stars that are both within your reach.

Thanks,

Jason

Not Just Cosmetics, Quiet, Comfortable, Energy Efficient and Clean Air Make a Home a True Thing of Beauty!

Demonstration home before and after

GreenHomes America partner, ASI Hastings, demonstration home had a number of improvements to help show homeowners how their homes could improve and how they could save in the process.  But cosmetics are the type of improvement we think of when we talk about home improvement.  Make it look good, new coat of paint, maybe a new countertop.

There’s much more that can be done and this demonstration home improvement list included: peace and quiet, comfort, and indoor air quality in addition to energy savings. There’s savings to be had outside too.

The team at ASI Hastings teamed up with Padre Dam, the local water district; they planted a less water intensive yard around the home.  The front yard is referred to as xeriscape. Reducing water usage makes sense here! More money is spent pumping water in the state of California than for any other electrical usage.

They also installed a lighter color garage door, which reduced some of the solar gain on that space.  That keeps equipment in the garage cooler and the house as well since the garage buffers part of home from the heat outside.

There’s no avoiding sunshine in San Diego, and it was put to good use in the as well adding panels to the roof, that’s not cosmetics, that’s great savings! We will cover solar, but more importantly what was done before it was even considered, in the coming weeks!

Thanks,

Jason

Taking a home for a test drive

August 21, 2013

When you shop for a car, you can see it on the lot or the showroom floor, same goes for most retail things, new clothing, or a book. You can even find a modular home on a sales lot, but it’s still difficult to see what comfort or efficiency looks like.  Or, what kind of savings there are to be had for a homeowner and their existing home.

Well the team at ASI Hastings Heating, Air & Solar in San Diego has created a showcase home to help spread the word about the huge energy incentives available to homeowners in their area as well as the great things that can and should be done in every home. ASI converted the garage into a hands-on “Innovation Center” to help homeowners get a clear understanding of how they can make similar upgrades to their home.

“We invested in the home to prove just how much savings a homeowner could receive,” explains Ken Justo, co-owner of ASI Hastings Heating and Air. “The home has undergone a full remodel inside and out. We are extremely proud of the outcome. People can actually see these upgrades in a real life setting; improvements that the average homeowner can also make.”

Over the next few weeks I will talk about what they did and why it’s so important for you to consider improvements like these in your own home.

Thanks,

Jason

Mandatory Common Sense

March 18, 2013

We often preach “reduce first” as the sensable approach for homeowners who are looking at installing expensive renewable energy.  It just makes sense.  If it costs a lot to install solar panels, make your home more efficient first reducing the number you need, and then install less of them!  Same goes for heating and cooling equipment.  Reduce the need for cooling or heating and install a smaller unit.

sun wiki

As reported by KCET, one town in California may be looking at mandatory solar panels on every roof.  Lancaster CA, a city of 160,000, is one of the top three cities for generating solar.  Clearly it’s an area that has succeeded with solar as you would expect in such a sunny place.

Using solar to help reduce energy costs for lighting, water heating, and air conditioning is all well and good, but there are some simple steps to take first.  Improvements such as adding efficient lighting, reducing air leaks and increasing insulation go a long way and cost far less.  Our GreenHomes America folks in Fresno, Hayward, San Jose, Los Banos, and San Diego, know that, how a home performs matters a great deal, and they know solar too.

I vote for mandatory common sense with a side order of solar!

Thanks,

Jason

More than 10,000 reasons why I love my job!

August 15, 2011

It’s Monday morning, and I get to glance at some of the feedback from our customers—and we have a lot of them!   It’s heartwarming.  We put in long hours here trying to live up to our ideals, and it’s nice to see that it pays off.  Indeed, it’s why it’s worth it.  And seeing the results and the happy customers is a great way to start my week.

From San Diego, Charles H. recently said that his house sounds much more sound proof, it doesn’t sound hollow inside anymore with his hardwood floors, he also said that in the recent heat wave his air conditioner only came on a few times.  He listened to his neighbor’s air conditioner cycle on and off all night.

Bob C. said that his house has been maintaining a nice temperature of about 72 – 74 degrees without running either the heater or the air conditioner, everything that we promised that home performance would do for him happened.

Across the country in Syracuse, Ben B., whose project we just finished said,  “ The crews never left a scrap, or screw, or piece of cardboard “ and  “The crews were always professional, and cared about what they were doing “.

Thanks to our customers for giving us the opportunity.  And thanks to all the GreenHomes employees and partners for delivering!

Thanks,
Mike

GreenHomes and ASI Hastings Bring Home Performance to San Diego

July 9, 2010

GreenHomes America welcomes San Diego-based ASI Hastings Heating and Air to the family.

San Diego Heating and Air Conditioning ContractorASI Hastings is the largest residential retail heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) enterprise in San Diego, with more than 65 employees. The 58-year-old firm has served over 500,000 homeowners in the San Diego area, and they will now add home performance retrofits to their services.

Home Performance contractors begin their work with a home energy audit, which uses advanced technology such as blower doors, infrared cameras, and computerized modeling to assess a home’s unique energy usage footprint and comfort issues. The energy audit diagnoses where the home is leaking air to the outside; measures the efficiency of cooling and heating systems; determines the effectiveness of insulation, ducts, windows, and doors; and checks combustion safety and gas leaks. After work is completed by in-house crews, the home energy audit is performed again to ensure issues are fixed and the project is successful.

GreenHomes President, Brett Knox notes, “With their excellent reputation, focus on quality, and solid operating foundation, ASI Hasting is the ideal partner for GreenHomes in the region.”

Read more about the GreenHomes/ASI Hasting venture in this news release.

Thanks,
Mike
