Upstate Update: New York/National Grid Rebate

October 3, 2010

Attention upstate New York residents:  the National Grid Upstate New York High Efficiency Heating Equipment Rebate Program officially opened October 1.  This is a great opportunity to get a little help upgrading for the winter.  Below is the schedule of rebate amounts.

2010 National Grid NY Rebate Schedule

As you can see, there are a wide range of products covered and the more efficient the appliance the greater the rebate.

The program requires that customers obtain a ‘rebate reservation’ for their anticipated rebate incentive at   The program is available on a first-come-first served basis, so make sure you take care of all of those nagging problems right away!

We can help navigate the utility requirements (they can be a bit confusing) and let you know if you qualify for other NY programs at 315-474-6549 or

Stop by the GreenHomes booth at the New York State Fair

August 31, 2010

Maggie Maurer is out at the GreenHomes booth at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, and she reports that a lot of folks are stopping by with great and serious questions (and some just want a lollipop!).  It’s super to see people taking a strong interest in energy-efficiency.  The biggest questions yesterday were about high-efficiency furnaces eligible for the federal tax credit through the end of the year and solar hot water.  We’ll see what the rest of the week brings.

Kudos to the Syracuse insulation crews

August 29, 2010

This note just made its way to my desk from our Syracuse office.  They come in all the time, but I don’t always have a chance to see the handwritten ones.  It’s a nice reminder to me of why I love what we do.

GreenHomes America insulated my old farmhouse, doing a fine job with minimal disruption.  The results has been a completely changed, comfortable living space.  I highly recommend [your] work!  – Donna H., Marcellus, NY

Great job, Frank and team.  Keep it up!

August 12, 2010

We just got word from our manufacturer about a steep discount on high-efficiency air-conditioning units that qualify for the federal tax credit and NYS incentives.  This holds through the end of August in Syracuse and Central New York, and we’re passing this right through to our customers.   Stop sweating with the humidity and high summer electric bills.  Call 315-474-6549.

It’s time to call a new HVAC contractor…

June 25, 2010

Syracuse Advisor John Scipione (we call him “The Master”), passed along a couple more doozies today, more examples of the real life conditions that we run across all too often.

From the “Joists?  We don’t need no stinkin’ joists!” Department, here an unwise contractor decided to figuratively cut corners, and literally cut a floor joist right out.  Folks, these joists are there for a reason.  Namely, to hold your floor up and keep it from bouncing!   The contractor also left a chunk of wood being held up by the electric wiring.  My inspector wouldn’t like that!  We can fix this, but you shouldn’t let a contractor get away with it to begin with.

And why fix an oil leak when you’ve got a bucket (hey, maybe BP should try this)?  An open bucket of fuel oil doesn’t smell too nice in the basement.  Probably a couple other concerns with that, too?

If your system looks like this, get help!  And one lesson for today is make sure you choose a quality contractor.

DIY Ductwork

June 15, 2010

As a follow-on to yesterday’s post about the DIY furnace horror story, John Scipione, a Senior Advisor in our Syracuse office, forwarded a shot of a furnace he ran across during an audit.  Many people know (and many more do not!) that your garden variety duct tape is good for lots of things, but not sealing ducts.  In this picture, sure enough, we can see some failing duct tape.  😉   That, however, is only part of the problem on this do-it-yourself duct job.  But at least this homeowner did find something to do with those old moving boxes!  And I do confess to a certain admiration for that can-do ingenuity.  Nonetheless, this example is not a good illustration of the fast road to energy-efficiency and a well performing home.

Air-Conditioner Service

May 25, 2010

It’s a hot one in the Northeast today.  Likely be setting new records throughout the region, including breaking the 90s way up in Burlington, VT.   This means the phone will likely be ringing for air-conditioner service.  It’s already ringing in Syracuse.  We encourage people not to wait!  Those folks on our service agreements had their units serviced weeks ago, and they’re ready to roll.   You should get your furnace and AC serviced annually to make sure they’re operating safely and efficiently.  And it’s best to do that with a regular service agreement–preventing problems before they happen.  (And because the don’t usually hit us at our busiest time, we offer our service agreement customers a discount on both service and replacement.)  An ounce of prevention, baby!
